It’s hard to keep up with Torry Martin. If he’s not entertaining crowds across the country with his “Lessons in Laughter” or writing award-winning screenplays or sketches, he’s probably working in a movie (he just provided some singing-voice talent for the upcoming Veggie Tales Christmas movie,Saint Nicholas), or acting in a television show or commercial.
When you do catch up with him, he’ll probably be busy working on his next project in his amazing Sparta, TN super hero home office, which was featured on the television program Splurge (click link for video).
The burly, self-proclaimed “hippie for the Holy One” hasn’t always lived life at such a pace, however. A few years ago, after giving up a comedy career in Los Angeles, where he appeared with Robin Williams and the like, Torry was living a contented life as a hermit in a remote cabin in Bear Valley, Alaska. Suddenly, God revealed that He had other plans that involved helping thousands of people.
As a comedian, Torry has performed at hundreds of churches, comedy clubs, conferences and festivals throughout the United States. He has also performed at two parties for Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates. Torry’s unique brand of comedy is best described by author Paul McCusker: “Take Garrison Keillor and put a spiritual perspective to him, and you have Torry Martin.”
Torry has appeared as an actor in several commercials and television programs, and has starred on stage in a leading role for the Columbia Artists national tour of the musical comedy Around the World in Eighty Days, which was written by Marc Cherry, writer for The Golden Girls and creator of Desperate Housewives.
Torry was most recently awarded “Best Writing – Nashville” for the 48-Hour Film Project in 2009, and “Best Actor – Nashville” for the 48-Hour Film Project in 2008 and 2007. He also won the 2008 Holiday Life Lesson Video Commercial Contest for The Learning Channel (TLC), which aired his commercial nationally.
The two-time Gospel Music Association Grand Prize Winner, for both his acting and writing abilities, writes popular humor columns for the periodicalsOn Course, Enrichment Journal, and Clubhouse. Martin is also the author of seven comedy sketchbooks for Lillenas Drama Publishers and is a writer for the national radio series Adventures in Odyssey, for which he created the popular character Wooton Bassett, loosely based on himself.
Torry has been featured on TLC’s Share the Shame, and in magazines likeToday’s Christian and At Home Tennessee. You can see him next in the feature film comedy, Sparkle and Tooter.
